Bonjour à vous, Norm ! C’est un plaisir.
Norm:
Francisca, could you tell us a little about yourself, and when did you passion for travel begin? What keeps you going?
Francisca:
I suppose it all started when I left Chile for France on board Le Pasteur. I was very young but I remember it well. It was quite an adventure ! Such an adventure in fact, that I start my last book Adventure Hotel Stories with this incredible story. Besides, my mother who is Scottish, and my father, who is Chilean, used to travel a lot and tell me fabulous stories. I always wanted to travel like them.
Norm:
Why did you choose to write about hotels?
Francisca:
As my life in France began at the Hotel du Louvre in Paris, in front of the Comedie Francaise, it was natural for me to write about hotels. It was my destiny !
Norm:
Could you recommend to our readers six of the most romantic and unique hotels in the world, and why do you consider them to be so unique and romantic?
Francisca: Well!
**The Soneva Fushi Resort in the Maldives. For the sun, the white beaches, the fabulous food and divine sunsets.
**Le Hameau Albert 1er in Chamonix-France. Part of the famous Relais & Château chain. It’s lovely to spend the day outside, walking or skiing, and to enjoy finally a warm wood fire and a good glass of wine. And here, the wine and everything else is perfect ! They have 20 000 bottles in their cellar !
**The Dorchester-London. A must in London. British style and elegance all the way.
**The Mission Ranch, Carmel. I love the cosy atmosphere, the soup of the day !, the unpretentious style and the charming town of Carmel. It’s reminds me of Chile.
**Hotel Janelas Verdes-Lisbon. A literary haunt. A well-kept secret. I felt in love with the place the first time I climbed the stone steps hidden among the plants and flowers.
Norm:
What does travel mean to you?
Francisca:
Freedom, curiosity, open mind, adaptability and& Everything can happen !
Norm:
How much time do you travel each year? How do you go about choosing the hotels you wish to write about? What challenges and obstacles have you encountered while covering these hotels?
Francisca:
I travel more or less 4 or 5 months each year, then I write my stories, prepare my books, work on other projects.
I choose places that I really want to see before I die ! It can be in France or in the Amazon. And the Amazon means trouble, believe me- but that’s also part of the fun!
Norm:
Which country and city have you enjoyed the most and why?
Francisca:
Lately, I was home in Patagonia, and it was great to ride horse like mad in a wild landscape. I was stunned by the harmony between men and nature.
Norm:
How do you come up with ideas for what you write? What methods do you use to flesh out your idea to determine if it’s salable?
Francisca:
I always think : What do I want to see ? Who do I want to meet? People are very important to me. They are the soul of a country or place. I also like to mix past and present. The salad has to be interesting, human and fun.
Norm:
How have you used the Internet to boost your writing career?
Francisca:

I think the Internet is great. It saves time. It’s totaly international. People all over the world have access to internet.
Norm:
Is there anything you wish to add that we have not covered?

Don’t even think of beginning your memoir with “I was born in [write in the name of your HOMETOWN] on [add your BIRTHDAY]. There is a much more effective-and interesting-technique for beginning a memoir! That method consists of a first chapter that highlights an achievement or underscores a huge failing. Essentially the lead chapter suggests the question “How did I get here?” will require reading the memoir.
Forget about writing the first chapter first. Go ahead and write about when you were born and about your hometown. That’s all fine and good and needs to be in the memoir-just realize that it is not best placed at the lead of the book, but it can be written first.
Instead, look back on your life and choose a point that is a culmination of a sustained effort or a nadir.
One memoir written by an international marketing guru who began her life in a small industrial town of New Hampshire has, as an opening chapter, her receiving a prestigious award in international marketing, one that was bestowed on her by a vote of her peers. The ten or so initial pages of the lead chapter reveals her nervousness as she realizes that she is in the running and we are led through the tensions of the pre-ceremony dinner. Later, as she stands on a podium in London’s Dorchester Hotel ballroom, she wonders, “How did a girl from Berlin, New Hampshire, get to receive this award and have had the interesting life that I had?”
The answer to that question, of course, begins in Chapter Two.
Conversely if you have begun life well with all the advantages but have ended up having a rough, sordid existence, then beginning with the nadir of your experience is an effective way to launch a memoir. The young man who graduated from an Ivy League school but who sinks into homelessness and, one night, is beaten to within an inch of his life under a big city overpass can lead with that fight scene and, as he convalesces in the hospital, he asks himself, “How did a guy like me end up left for dead before he was thirty?” The answer, dear reader, begins in Chapter Two.
A lead chapter depicting one’s apogee or nadir is a proven formula that can snooker your reader. It’s not the only way to start a memoir but is sure is a good one. Give it a try.

North Charleston is one of the most sought after tourist destinations in the world and about 4 million visitors reach here every year making it one of the greatest destinations. This city is situated in the counties of Dorchester and Charleston.
The Native Americans were the first settlers of the area and were the ancestors of Catawba, Cherokee and Yamasee tribes. The French and Spanish tried hard to establish permanent settlement in the region but they failed to do so. But in 1670, British settled down near Charleston and named the area as Carolina after the name of the England’s King Charles II. The region was further divided into the provinces of South Carolina and North Carolina. During the beginning of eighteenth century, producing rice was one of the most profitable business and millions of pounds of rice was exported during that time. It gradually became the commercially import port and as a consequence the nearby area also began to develop. South Carolina declared its independence from English in 1776. South Carolina was the area which had witnessed more wars than any other region of the nation.
Charleston exhibits several attractions such as American Military Museum, Angel Oak Tree and many more historically significant sites which make the history alive. The American Military Museum offers around 70 displays of authentic artifacts from 14 American conflicts right from the revolutionary war to the most recent Iraq war. One can find 260 uniforms, 33 flags medal and a range of artifacts from departments of U.S defense. Initially the museum was about the military uniforms and personal effects and one can find a display showing how a chaplain of the military used to dress. This is one of the best places to find a range of unique and rarest items.
